A man drove his car into a group of eight pedestrians Tuesday evening in Northern California. Authorities believe it may have been an “intentional act.”

Police responded to the accident scene around 6:40 p.m. in Sunnyvale. The investigation shows a group of pedestrians were on the sidewalk when the driver of a black sedan drove into them. Witnesses shared that the sedan showed no signs of slowing down or braking and eventually smashed into a tree.

All eight victims were taken to a nearby hospital for minor to severe injuries. Among the eight was a 13-year-old girl.

The man responsible was taken into custody, and an investigation is underway to determine if the act was intentional.

Being injured in a pedestrian accident can leave you with costly medical bills and severe pain and suffering. You shouldn’t have to pay for damages after an accident that wasn’t your fault. However, you may be under the impression that an “intentional act” becomes a criminal case, making a personal injury claim impossible to pursue. That’s not true.

Although the accident may have been intentional, you still have the right to seek compensation. Even if the accident is classified as a criminal case, you may still be able to pursue a settlement through a civil case.

It can be difficult seeking fair compensation when the incident was a multi-victim accident. Depending on the liable person’s policy limits, there is only so much you and the other injured victims can collect through the insurance company. Instead of fighting over the same policy limit on your own, hire an experienced accident attorney to help.
